You’ve probably seen those beautiful Zsolnay tiles on Üllői út countless times — but trying to remember when you could actually walk inside is another matter. The Museum of Applied Arts, designed by architects Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos, has been closed for restoration since 2017. The work never actually began, and for nine years now one of Budapest’s most beautiful buildings has been standing behind scaffolding netting.
But — a miracle. On 20 June, as part of Múzeumok Éjszakája, the doors will open — and it’s a rare chance worth taking. Visitors will be shown the main vestibule, the Lechner family’s ceramic coat of arms, the glass courtyard from two levels, fragments of the original decorative painting discovered during pre-renovation surveys, the former director’s offices and staff corridors. The route covers 11 points in the safe section of the building.
