If you think Hungary has no places left to surprise even a seasoned traveller, head to Sátoraljaújhely. This is where you’ll find the Bridge of National Unity (Nemzeti Összetartozás Hídja), which in January 2025 was officially entered into the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest traditional pedestrian suspension bridge. Its span is 723 metres — two metres longer than the previous record holder. The bridge, along with a bobsled track, zip line and chairlift, is part of the Zemplén Adventure Park.
The bridge is just as impressive from a distance. The sheer scale of the structure is best felt from the valley floor, where you truly grasp how monumental the project is and how naturally it fits into the mountain landscape.
Take a few steps onto the bridge and it’s immediately clear why crossing it is called an adventure in itself. The structure sways constantly underfoot, reminding you that the ground is dozens of metres below. In the very middle is a glass section that lets you look straight down into the valley. If that feels too daring, you can walk around it on the solid part of the deck — though even there, most people instinctively shift their gaze from the depths to the surrounding mountains.
On the Szár mountain side there is a memorial complex dedicated to the Treaty of Trianon, while Vár mountain holds the ruins of a medieval castle, a modern viewing platform, and a miniature sculpture of Lajos Kossuth by Mihály Kolodko. Kossuth was born just a few kilometres away in Monok, which is why he became the symbolic “patron” of this place.
There are several ways to reach the bridge. The simplest is to park near Vár mountain and walk a few minutes from the visitor centre (a paid shuttle is also available). For a more immersive experience, start at the Zemplén Adventure Park: take the chairlift up to Magas mountain, then switch to the Dongó gondola (or, if you prefer a thrill, the zip line) to reach Szár mountain. From there a wide walking path leads directly to the bridge entrance.

Opening hours: daily 10:00–19:00 (hours may vary depending on season and weather conditions).
Ticket prices: adult ticket — 5,000 HUF; residents of Sátoraljaújhely and Sárospatak — 4,000 HUF.
There is no time limit on the bridge, but no more than 300 people are allowed on it at one time.
