How the language interview really works when applying for Hungarian citizenship — inside Hungary and at consulates abroad.

There’s a common misconception that the citizenship interview is simply a set of standard questions about relatives: who was born where, who was who, what documents you have. In practice, it’s more nuanced than that.

To start with: inside Hungary, the classic question-and-answer interview can be reduced to a minimum — and sometimes barely happens at all. Kormányablak staff often get a clear sense of your language level just from the document submission process itself: how you greet them, how you respond to requests, how you clarify details. At consulates, on the other hand, the interview is rarely skipped, and it’s worth preparing for it separately.

But in both cases, what matters isn’t just your ability to answer questions about your family and ancestry. Far more important is the ability to sustain a natural conversation: handing over documents, filling a pause, narrating your own actions, responding politely to procedural moments, and not getting lost in a routine administrative situation.

That’s why preparing for a citizenship application isn’t just about memorising answers to form questions — it’s about practising real communication in Hungarian.
