Many applicants assume that Hungarian ancestry can only be proven with an ancestor’s birth certificate. In practice, the list of accepted documents is much broader.
Civil records
☐ Birth certificate
☐ Marriage certificate
☐ Death certificate
Archival and church documents
☐ Archive certificate
☐ Extract from a register of births, marriages or deaths
☐ Church record of birth, marriage or death
For these documents, it is preferable to have the source and record details noted: book number, page, and record number.
Other official documents
☐ Military record
☐ Employment record book
☐ School leaving certificate
☐ Certificate from place of work or study
Important to know
- The document must allow the ancestor’s identity to be established and must include their name, place and date of birth.
- If a document is not in Hungarian, a certified translation into Hungarian will be required.
- For simplified naturalisation, it is not enough to find a Hungarian ancestor — you must also document the full chain of kinship between that ancestor and the applicant.
