Let’s take a break from terrifying legal texts with some useful vocabulary. Starting from the basics: what is your name? Sounds simple, but it comes with a surprising number of nuances. Just the word név can throw you off at an interview or when filling out a form.
The word translates as “name.” When it changes grammatically, név almost always behaves as an exception: in the accusative case (nevet), with possessive suffixes (nevem, neve, nevük, etc.), and in the plural (nevek), the long vowel é is shortened.
On the cultural side: in Hungarian tradition, the surname comes before the given name. So the famous director Béla Tarr is Tarr Béla in Hungarian. This is especially helpful when both names could pass for given names — for instance, Örkény István or Zoltán Gábor. Knowing the “surname first” rule, you immediately know to address them as István and Gábor, not Örkény and Zoltán.
Hungarians don’t use patronymics, but documents often require the mother’s maiden name — that is, her name at birth (typically phrased as anya neve, anya születési neve, or anya leánykori neve).
