Hungarian pronouns are much easier to learn in rows than one by one. Take the question word ki? who? Add different elements and you get:
valaki someone
Valaki kopog az ajtón. ⓘ
bárki / akárki anyone, whoever
Bárki jelentkezhet. ⓘ
mindenki everyone, everybody
Mindenki megérkezett. ⓘ
senki nobody, no one
Senki nem jött el. ⓘ
aki who, the one who (relative)
Ő az, aki segített nekem. ⓘ
The same system works with other question words:
| vala- | bár-/akár- | minden- | se(m)- | a- | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ki? who? | valaki | bárki / akárki | mindenki | senki | aki |
| mi? what? | valami | bármi / akármi | minden | semmi | ami |
| milyen? what kind? | valamilyen | bármilyen/ akármilyen |
mindenféle | semmilyen | amilyen |
| hol? where? | valahol | bárhol / akárhol | mindenhol | sehol | ahol |
Double negation
The key rule for negative pronouns: Hungarian requires double negation.
Senki nem jött el. ⓘ · Semmit sem értek. ⓘ · Sehol sem találom. ⓘ
So Hungarian pronouns really are a construction kit. Learn the question-word base and understand what each element adds: vala-, bár-/akár-, minden-, se(m)-, a-.
